The candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • hold, at minimum, a high school diploma and
  1. 5 years of relevant work experience, completed within the last 10 years; or
  2. 3 years of relevant work experience, completed within the last 10 years, and an Associate degree in culinary arts; or
  3. 1 year of relevant work experience, completed within the last 10 years and a Bachelor's degree in culinary arts.

Example Qualifying Experience: Caterer, executive chef, head chef, pastry chef, personal chef, restaurant manager

  • Hold one of the following industry credentials: Certified Culinary Educator (CCE) Certification, National Registry of Food Safety Professionals, or Serve-Safe
  • pass a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
  • attend a one week New CTE teacher training if applicable
  • enroll in Educator Prep Courses at an approved university offering the following endorsement: Culinary Arts (Endorsement Code: 730) if applicable.

Culinary Arts equips students with the skills to pursue careers in the culinary field as a personal chef, caterer, executive chef, and food and beverage manager. Courses cover topics that range from kitchen safety and sanitation, history of the food services industry, careers, nutrition, recipe basics, proper kitchen tools and equipment, and kitchen staples to food presentation, advanced cooking principles, bakeshop preparation skills, professionalism, and business opportunities.1

The Culinary teacher will also be responsible for sponsoring an active Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) through FCCLA (Family, Career and Consumer Leaders of America), which enthusiastically competes in local, regional, state, and national skills competitions and events. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a "Quality Program of Study" as directed by the TDOE CCTE Department, maintain compliance with state and federal funding requirements, and provide complete, compliant, and on-time Size, Scope, and Quality Indicators (SSQI) documentation on a yearly basis. The principal may assign extra co-curricular duties, meetings, committees, and professional development throughout the school year.
